Poetry in Rotherham 2011

February 2011 email from espondent Ben spirit_of_89athotmail.com (remember to replace at with @) :-

"Hello, My name is Ben Addy and I work for Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance as an events co-ordinator. I was looking through the internet to find poets, writers and folk musicians from the Rotherham area who would be interested in forming a poetry collective, with the ultimate aim of putting on a performance at the end of March. I found your website via google and would like to invite you to a meeting taking place on the 25th of February at 6:30 to discuss the format of the event, and to decide upon a location. At present, the venues we have available are Old Market Gallery, and Imperial Buildings."

Now that was addressed to me and indeed I was once a poet, but no more. However if you are interested Ben's email address is given.

Rotherham Open Poetry Competition

The 2010 Competition is closed. The results will appear in the February 2011 edition of www.carillonmag.org.uk.

Rotherham Poetry Champion

This competition is not held in Rotherham but the organiser are looking for 'Poetry Champions' from towns across the UK. One poet will be chosen from the entries to represent each. So if you fancy yourself as a poet, entry is free. Winners will receive a free copy of the book, and the overall winner gets £1000. Closing date each year is 30th June.

Please send three unpublished poems (up to 20 lines or 160 words - well that's me kiboshed as virtually all my stuff is much longer than that) on any subject to United Press, Admail 3735, London, EC1B 1JB.

Some of my Works

One of my short poems if you are interested:–

Cynheidre

Cynheidre disaster: methane in the tunnels;
Heavy backblow through the mine and nine are dead.
Blows the siren at the minehead: white-faced women rush from houses,
As their mothers and grandmothers did before.

or another if you are a glutton for punishment:–

Refusnik

No bright machines will breathe for me,
Clean my blood when my kidneys fail,
Pump my heart when the beat is dead,
Maintain my brain when the thought is gone,
Keep my soul where I would not be.

There's more, much more....... but not here so you can breathe a heavy sigh of relief.
