Rotherham is really not a hotbed of literary culture. There are no world-renowned authors, poets or playwrights from the town: if there are they have been hiding their lights under some very enormous bushels. How's that for nice bit of cliché! The best that I have come up with are Ebenezer Elliott, who was a poet amongst other things, and hailed from Rotherham. So does the modern crime fiction writer Peter Turnbull. You can read a bit more about them onsite under the section Rotherham - Famous People from Rotherham.
There are plenty of people in Rotherham who fancy themselves as writers, but I have found little of their work in publication. I will 'fess up here that I used to fancy myself as something of a poet. I had a couple of poems published in the long ago and had a commendation in some competition or other. However of late I have strayed from the pure and narrow path of poesy and found myself on this superhighway without a rhyme, assonance or bit of alliteration in sight.
