Art Galleries
I have found it difficult to write this page. What is an Art Gallery? There are foundations that have exhibitions of paintings and sculpture but do not sell the items on show. This is what I truly call an Art Gallery: in which case Rotherham Museum seems to be the only place in town to fulfil these criteria. Other galleries hold permanent and/or rotating exhibitions, the purpose of which is commercial. You can find a couple of these in the Borough.
Then there is Rotherham Art Gallery which which is a bit of a hybrid beast. There are no permanent exhibitions of art on show there but rotating exhibitions in the main gallery, the upstairs corridor and the showcase. Sometimes these contain artworks or other items which are informative but not for sale, and sometimes their purpose is wholly commercial, and sometimes it is an admixture.

Old Market Gallery
Established in 2010 by the Open Minds Theatre Company. The original agreement was that the Old Market would be used to display work for the forthcoming Rotherham Open Arts Festival, a showcase event for artists living in the area. After a surge of interest the gallery clearly had a place within the Town. The following month a Curator was appointed and began the process of transforming the gallery from a temporary festival site site into a more permanent gallery space as well as outlining a programme of events for the coming year. The intention is to develop the Old Market Gallery into a transparent, all inclusive art space for people to meet, read zines and view great art work.
