Wath Shopping
Wath also called Wath-upon-Dearne is centred on Montgomery Square, where the town's main shops, library and bus station are located. Wath as a town was badly hit by the closure of much of the local industry, notable the coal and coke industries and declined very badly until a very good deal of EU money was spent cleaning up the filthy relics.
Wath is blessed with a great church, a fine town hall, a theatre and some rather good pubs. What it is not blessed with are wonderful shops. There is a huge Tesco only just out of the town centre and an Asda local, both of which are fairly recent. There is however a first class butcher: the sort of butcher that all butchers used to be.
There is a trading estate out of town at Cortonwood and trading units open to the public on some of the new parks at Manvers.
There is a Wednesday market which has been moved from the traditional market site to the town centre square. It's not very big but there seemed to be plenty of choice at reasonable prices. There is a market hall open every day which meanders back and is bigger than it looks. There are some small shops that, I presume can only keep going because the rents are cheap. There's a nice café upstairs together with an extensive craft shop that caters mainly for card makers and holds regular workshops.
