Markets in the Borough of Rotherham

shoppingMarkets have existed under charter in Rotherham since the early Middle Ages. Rotherham Outdoor Market is much decayed at the side of what it was just a few years ago. Some days barely half the stalls are occupied. At one time there were some truly top quality traders standing there but many of these have now gone. The Market Hall still seems to do a brisk trade and empty stalls are very quickly re-let.

Up to 2002 there was a craft market held once a month but this was terminated. There was much talk of developing Rotherham Markets and bringing in new ideas. There was a Staffordshire Pot Market and a Christmas Street Market in the run up to Christmas 2002 but there has been nothing since.

A three day Continental Market was held in the town centre on 2/3/4 October 2003 with producers from France, Holland, Spain and Turkey, selling a wide variety of produce, much that cannot be accessed locally. When I visited it was very busy and there were many visitors who would not normally visit Rotherham. However most of the prices were very expensive and I heard much complaint about this. Also some of the regular market traders where whingeing that it was taking away their trade. These continental have been held again in 2004 (twice), 2005 and 2006. Whilst many of the traders are genuinely 'continental' some are not.

The Market Hall is open six days a week. There are market days on Monday, Friday and Saturday, second–hand clothes on Tuesdays, Bric–a–Brac on Wednesdays. On Tuesdays there is an additional market in Effingham Street and last time I visited in June 2007 there were a couple of interesting new stalls.

Rawmarsh Market

If I thought Rotherham Market was decayed then it has to be said that Rawmarsh Market has virtually withered out of existence. It was still quite lively only ten years ago but now only one or two stalls stand. Tuesdays and Fridays.

Farmers' Markets

There has long been a farm stall selling produce at Wentworth Garden Centre and some bright spark decided in 2002 to try and develop this into a proper farmer's market with a wide variety of stalls. The powers that be in Rotherham Council did not like this. I have not followed all the in and outs of the dispute but the latest diktat from the Council stated that the stalls that stood could only sell produce made by the stallholder. This, you can imagine, has kiboshed nearly everybody since most stalls accessed some of their produce from small producers or craftspeople down the road to give their customers a wider choice. This has also kiboshed the charity stall that used to stand selling a variety of products made by the members. In July 2003 I have not seen the market advertised for some time so it looks as if Rotherham Council has managed to kill it off.

Wrong! We called up at Wentworth Garden Centre to buy some plants and I acquired the list of Markets. These are listed in Recreation in Rotherham >> Rotherham Events >> Events Diary on the month by month pages.

From 25 April 2007 Rotherham Borough Council are holding a Farmers' Market in Effingham Street. This will be held on the last Wednesday of every month thereafter (except December when it open on the 19th). Visit the website www.syfarmersmarkets.co.uk.
