Shopping in Rotherham

business imageRotherham, it has been said by many, is a town full of charity shops (thirteen at my last count and that doesn't include all those outside the town centre), hairdressers (much more than thirteen) and building societies. Nowadays you can add mobile phone shops to this list as well with card shops another close contender. No don't laugh – there is some shopping to be had in Rotherham town centre though it won't be able to spend until you bend or shop until you drop in the Centre of Town. The Rotherham Town Centre Initiative has brought a number of smaller shops into the town centre in 2010 and hopefully they'll encourage a few more.

Rotherham's real 'High Street' these days is Parkgate Shopping, previously known as Parkgate Retail World. This started out in life about thirty years as mainly warehouse type shops but now this is where you will find M&S, BHS, Matalan, Top Shop et al. Also free parking but, at busy times horrendous traffic getting in and out and through Parkgate.

The Markets in Rotherham town have their origins in the Middle Ages, have survived through the centuries but are struggling today to keep up with the pre-packaged way of life. In other villages and townships in the borough markets still exist but only just.

Visit Rotherham Town Centre www.rotherhamtowncentre.co.uk for various offers and discount vouchers.

I hope to expand this page and look at the shops in Wath and Maltby and some other places as well when I get the time.
