The Rotherham Townscape Heritage Initiative Project
The Rotherham Townscape Heritage Initiative Project has received
funding of £1.1 million from the Heritage Lottery fund. This will go towards a £5 million target to be used for the preservation and regeneration of High Street. I
understand the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council have allocated another £1 million towards the regeneration work. Additional funding will have to be approved by Yorkshire
Forward as part of the Rotherham Renaissance programme but once this is in place it is hoped that work can start quite quickly; as I write this in April 2007 a start date of July 2007
is being mentioned. We shall see!
The project will:-
- Provide grants to the owners of properties on High Street and in the Minster Yard to fund repairs and restoration of frontages, windows and for new shop fronts.
- Target specific buildings like the Three Cranes Inn and Yard (long neglected) and the George Wright Building.
- Raise the standard of repair to buildings in High Street and encourage new use of empty buildings.
Owners of eligible properties will be able to apply for grants for repair and restoration work. The regeneration Scheme is being supported by Rotherham Civic Society, the Chamber of Commerce and some town centre property owners.
September 2007 As far as I can see High Street gets deader every time I walk up it. There is no sign of anything being done about the historic buildings as far as I can see.
